Confrontation with Gabriel

Cinnamon Bun

Confrontation with Gabriel is the furious Green Hold reckoning that follows the attempted kidnapping of Amaryllis. It begins as a personal accusation against Gabriel, but expands into a political and security crisis when the group learns that Cervid mercenaries crossed the border specifically to seize her. At the same time, Broccoli Bunch arrives carrying the moral burden of having killed Titan and Rex to save Amaryllis, so the confrontation becomes both an investigation into betrayal and a scene about how violence is interpreted by those who survive it.

Causes and Background

The immediate cause is the attack on Amaryllis by Cervid mercenaries. During the rescue, Broccoli Bunch killed Titan, identified as a level-12 Wind Runner, and Rex, identified as a level-10 Flaming Lancer. The system granted bonus experience because Titan was above Broccoli Bunch’s level, although the reward was reduced because Broccoli Bunch was not the primary combatant. The notification’s blunt announcement that the two men had been killed becomes psychologically important: Broccoli Bunch does not experience the deaths as an abstract victory, but as the removal of two people from their families and friends.

The killing leaves Broccoli Bunch in a state of moral injury. He interprets the deaths as something he has taken from the world and briefly treats them as proof that he has committed the worst possible act. While the group moves toward the Cervids, he deliberately slows the journey, asking to speak when they arrive so that negotiation or an apology might still be possible. The delay gives the Cervids time to prepare another attack, but it also gives Broccoli Bunch time to breathe and mourn two men whose names he knows even though he has never seen their faces.

Amaryllis becomes the first person to challenge that self-condemnation. When Broccoli Bunch tells her that he has killed people, she initially understands him to mean the mercenaries who tried to abduct her. She then rejects his attempt to treat the deaths as morally identical to murder without context. In her view, the men were mercenaries engaged in a targeted kidnapping, and eliminating them was comparable to removing weeds; the fact that Broccoli Bunch gained a level confirms that the system recognized the combat as consequential. Broccoli Bunch still insists that no one should die and that killing is wrong, but Amaryllis answers his shame with an embrace, calling him an idiot for compromising himself on her behalf while also acknowledging the depth of his loyalty.

The Confrontation at Green Hold

The party reaches Green Hold at night. Broccoli Bunch is able to notice the town’s stone-and-mud homes, rounded buildings marked as Tadpole Houses, guard towers, and the tallest inn with a blue-shingled roof, but the quiet arrival is immediately overturned by Amaryllis’s anger. She kicks open the inn door and demands to find Gabriel, startling Broccoli Bunch and silencing the room’s conversation and music.

Gabriel is seated near the bar with several empty cups before him and alcohol reddening his flabby cheeks. The surrounding patrons retreat as Amaryllis points him out and addresses him with a string of insults. She crosses the entire floor, seizes him by the scruff of his jacket, and drags him toward the stairs. Gabriel attempts to resist, but his swings are weak and unfocused, while Amaryllis’s accumulated rage gives her the advantage. The public spectacle makes the accusation impossible to contain within a private disagreement: every patron becomes a witness to the rupture between them.

Broccoli Bunch tries to soften the disturbance by apologizing to the Grenoils in the common room and asking about the musician outside. No one answers, although the patrons resume their meals and drinks while speculating about what Gabriel did to provoke such wrath. The scene’s humor does not erase the danger; it places the confrontation inside a community that can observe its violence without yet knowing its cause.

Upstairs, Amaryllis shakes Gabriel in an empty bedroom and demands to know who paid him off. Her language becomes so excessive that Broccoli Bunch worries she may kill him and places a hand on her shoulder, asking her not to. Amaryllis’s feathers and hair flare outward as she declares that Gabriel betrayed her. The physical transformation makes her fury visible, while Broccoli Bunch’s intervention establishes a contrast between her desire for immediate punishment and his continued resistance to killing, even after the deaths of Titan and Rex.

From Personal Betrayal to Political Evidence

The confrontation changes direction when Broccoli Bunch states the essential fact: someone tried to kidnap Amaryllis. Gabriel initially responds that the attempt failed, but Amaryllis specifies that the attackers were Cervid mercenaries and that she was their intended target. This detail sobers Gabriel. He explains that Cervids on that side of the border mean they have found a way to cross without being detected, although he also admits that the patrols have not been especially effective.

Amaryllis attributes her survival directly to Broccoli Bunch, saying that without him she might already have been taken to Manamere or elsewhere for ransom. That statement gives the earlier deaths their immediate context: Broccoli Bunch’s morally agonizing violence was performed during a rescue rather than in an unprovoked encounter. It also confirms that the kidnapping was not random trouble on the road but a targeted operation with a larger territorial implication.

Gabriel responds practically rather than defensively. He explains that the ship returning to Port Royal will pass early the next morning and is intended to wait for all of them to board. The group can take it back to Port Royal first thing, while Gabriel sends a message to the mayor of Green Hold. His reaction reframes the alleged betrayal as part of a wider security failure involving the border, the Cervids, the town’s patrols, and the possibility of someone revealing the party’s location.

The final suspicion remains unresolved within the scene. Broccoli Bunch observes that the mercenaries were specifically looking for Amaryllis and concludes that someone must have known where the group would be. Thus the confrontation does not end with a complete explanation of Gabriel’s supposed betrayal. Instead, it produces a confirmed threat, a planned withdrawal, and a new question about how the attackers obtained their information.

Consequences and Significance

The most immediate consequence is Amaryllis’s recovery of agency. She does not wait for a formal inquiry or a calm explanation; she confronts Gabriel physically and forces the alleged betrayal into the open. Her anger is excessive enough to threaten further violence, yet the scene also shows that her aggression is directed toward protecting herself and demanding an account of the danger imposed on her.

For Broccoli Bunch, the confrontation creates a second form of aftermath. Amaryllis’s embrace has not erased his grief over Titan and Rex, and he still expects to cry properly later, but her explanation allows him to function. His moral position remains intact: he continues to believe that killing is wrong even when the victims were mercenaries. The difference is that the narrative places this belief beside the necessity of rescue rather than treating it as a simple answer.

The group’s departure for Port Royal converts the confrontation into a turning point. What began with insults in a crowded inn ends with a diplomatic message to the mayor and an early voyage away from Green Hold. The scene therefore joins intimate friendship, guilt, and public accusation to the larger conflict between the Grenoils and the Cervids. Gabriel’s drunken presence, Amaryllis’s theatrical fury, and Broccoli Bunch’s attempts to prevent another death give the episode a comic surface, but beneath it lies a serious revelation: the attack was targeted, the border was penetrated, and someone may have disclosed the group’s movements.
